Breaking news: Facebook may have your tax and financial data.
If you’ve used online tax prep software, you may have been affected.
They even steal information about your children.
Nonprofit news organization The Markup conducted an in-depth investigation.
They found that Facebook’s “Meta Pixel” scrapes data from free online tax prep sites including H&R Block, TaxAct, and many others. They subtly operated in plain sight without some companies even noticing; now they’re all in damage control mode.
And again, we learn that nothing – even tax software endorsed by our government – is truly free.
Data taken includes income, student loan debt for dependents, the amount of citizens’ last tax refunds, and more.
Facebook exploits – and profits from – this private financial information. This same data typically requires a subpoena as part of a legal proceeding; even then, records are often sealed.
It’s no secret that they don’t guard our data. Facebook recently fired several employees and contractors for hacking into user data and selling it to third parties.
Do you trust The Zuck with your family’s financial information?
If not, here are some things you can do:
-Quit Facebook and formally request they delete your data.
-Write your Senators and Representatives.
-If you use online software or a tax preparer, contact them and demand privacy.
-Forward this or The Markup article to help inform and protect other Facebook users.
Facebook once did a great job of bringing people together, but we were never their “customer” or “user.”
We have always been a product to be sold.
Don’t let them do it to our kids.
